How to use the placement library
Choose the muscle you want to measure, then place the sensor on the recommended region. The goal is stable contact over the muscle belly, not chasing a perfect anatomical landmark during a busy session.
The list below includes muscles that are practical for surface measurement. Deep muscles and regions covered by larger muscles are intentionally excluded from customer-facing selection.
Muscle Placement Notes
These notes are adapted from the placement library in the Inara Performance app.
Quadriceps
Quadriceps Rectus Femoris
Central quadriceps muscle responsible for knee extension and hip flexion.
Place the sensor on the center of the front thigh.
Quadriceps Vastus Lateralis
Outer quadriceps muscle responsible for knee extension.
Place the sensor on the outer front thigh.
Quadriceps Vastus Medialis
Inner quadriceps muscle responsible for knee extension and stabilization.
Place the sensor on the inner front thigh, just above the knee.
Hamstrings
Hamstrings Biceps Femoris Long
Long head of the lateral hamstring responsible for knee flexion and hip extension.
Place the sensor on the outer part of the back thigh.
Hamstrings Semimembranosus
Inner hamstring muscle responsible for knee flexion and hip extension.
Place the sensor on the inner part of the back thigh, deeper than semitendinosus.
Hamstrings Semitendinosus
Medial hamstring muscle responsible for knee flexion and hip extension.
Place the sensor on the inner part of the back of the thigh.
Glutes
Glutes Maximus Upper
Upper portion of the gluteus maximus responsible for hip extension.
Place the sensor on the upper part of the buttock.
Glutes Maximus Lower
Lower portion of the gluteus maximus responsible for hip extension.
Place the sensor on the lower part of the buttock.
Glutes Medius Posterior
Posterior glute medius fibers responsible for hip abduction and external rotation.
Place the sensor on the rear part of the side of the hip.
Chest
Pectorals Clavicular
Upper chest fibers responsible for arm flexion and adduction.
Place the sensor on the upper chest, below the collarbone.
Pectorals Sternal
Middle chest fibers responsible for pushing and arm adduction.
Place the sensor on the middle of the chest.
Pectorals Abdominal
Lower chest fibers responsible for arm depression and adduction.
Place the sensor on the lower chest, above the upper abs.
Shoulders
Deltoids Anterior
Front shoulder muscle responsible for arm flexion and internal rotation.
Place the sensor on the front of the shoulder.
Deltoids Middle
Middle shoulder muscle responsible for arm abduction.
Place the sensor on the middle of the shoulder.
Deltoids Posterior
Back shoulder muscle responsible for arm extension and external rotation.
Place the sensor on the back of the shoulder.
Arms
Biceps Brachii Long Head
Outer head of the biceps responsible for elbow flexion and forearm supination.
Place the sensor on the outer side of the front upper arm.
Biceps Brachii Short Head
Inner head of the biceps responsible for elbow flexion and forearm supination.
Place the sensor on the inner side of the front upper arm.
Triceps Brachii Long Head
Long head of the triceps responsible for elbow extension and shoulder extension.
Place the sensor on the back of the upper arm, closer to the shoulder.
Triceps Brachii Lateral Head
Lateral triceps head responsible for elbow extension.
Place the sensor on the outer side of the back of the upper arm.
Triceps Brachii Medial Head
Inner triceps head responsible for elbow extension.
Place the sensor on the inner side of the back of the upper arm.
Back
Lats Upper
Upper latissimus dorsi fibers responsible for arm adduction and extension.
Place the sensor on the upper part of the back, below the armpit.
Lats Lower
Lower latissimus dorsi fibers responsible for arm adduction and extension.
Place the sensor on the lower part of the back, below the armpit.
Trapezius Upper
Upper trapezius fibers responsible for elevating the shoulder.
Place the sensor on the upper back, near the neck.
Trapezius Middle
Middle trapezius fibers responsible for scapular retraction.
Place the sensor between the shoulder blades.
Trapezius Lower
Lower trapezius fibers responsible for depressing the scapula.
Place the sensor on the mid-back, below the shoulder blades.
Lower Back Erector Spinae Lumbar
Lower erector spinae fibers responsible for extending the lumbar spine.
Place the sensor on the lower back, adjacent to the lumbar spine.
Core
Abs Upper
Upper rectus abdominis fibers responsible for trunk flexion.
Place the sensor on the upper abdomen, above the navel.
Abs Lower
Lower rectus abdominis fibers responsible for trunk flexion.
Place the sensor on the lower abdomen, below the navel.
Obliques External
Outer abdominal muscles responsible for trunk rotation and lateral flexion.
Place the sensor on the side of the abdomen, below the ribs.
Calves
Calves Gastrocnemius Lateral
Outer head of the main calf muscle responsible for plantar flexion.
Place the sensor on the outer side of the upper calf.
Calves Gastrocnemius Medial
Inner head of the main calf muscle responsible for plantar flexion.
Place the sensor on the inner side of the upper calf.
Adductors
Adductors Longus
Long inner thigh muscle responsible for adducting the thigh.
Place the sensor on the inner thigh, in the middle of the adductor group.
Adductors Magnus
Large inner thigh muscle responsible for adducting the thigh.
Place the sensor on the inner thigh, toward the back of the adductor group.
Adductors Gracilis
Long, thin inner thigh muscle responsible for leg adduction.
Place the sensor on the inner thigh, most superficial of the adductor group.
Forearms
Forearms Extensors
Back-of-forearm muscles responsible for extending the wrist and fingers.
Place the sensor on the back of the forearm, below the elbow.
Forearms Flexors
Inner forearm muscles responsible for wrist and finger flexion.
Place the sensor on the inner side of the forearm, below the elbow.
Forearms Pronator
Forearm muscle responsible for rotating the palm downward.
Place the sensor on the inner side of the forearm, near the elbow.
